Core Interpretive Themes & Exhibits

The Center perfectly embodies modern interpretive principles by focusing its 10,000-square-foot facility on cohesive, narrative-driven regional storytelling: 

• The Pacific Gray Whale: The crown jewel of the Center’s storytelling. It acts as a premier shore-based whale-watching site and hosts the official ACS Gray Whale Census & Behavior Project. Inside, exhibits feature a massive, 11-foot-tall Sperm whale jaw. 
• Local Maritime & Regional History: Features interactive historical exhibits detailing life from prehistoric times and the native Tongva peoples up through the 1800s ranchos era. It also features the original lens from the adjacent historic Point Vicente Lighthouse.
• Dynamic Geology: An exhibit dedicated specifically to explaining the Peninsula’s unique, unstable geology and the mechanics behind local coastal landslides.
• The outdoor Native Plant Garden showcases drought-tolerant California native plant species adapted to coastal bluff scrub ecosystems. It is an oceanside educational landscape maintained with support from the California Native Plant Society (CNPS) South Coast Chapter and city volunteers. The garden remains an active community site featuring regular volunteer maintenance days held on periodic Sundays throughout the year.
